Seputarkarawang.com - Karawang, The hopes of residents of Karawang and surrounding areas to enjoy KRL Commuter Line services are getting closer to reality. The government, through the West Java Provincial Transportation Service and the Jakarta-Banten Railway Engineering Center (BTP), has officially finalized plans for the electrification of the railway line across Cikarang to Cikampek. This strategic project is designed to respond to the high movement of people in this industrial corridor who currently still depend on local trains with limited capacity. This concrete step is a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Transportation and the West Java Provincial Government which was agreed last April. Considering the extraordinary increase in passengers—where the Walahar Express train alone recorded an increase of up to 4 million passengers by 2025—extending the KRL's reach is considered an urgent emergency solution. It is hoped that this electrification will be able to relieve severe congestion on the Karawang-Cikarang arterial route which is filled with industrial area workers every day.The Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) confirmed that this large project has been included in the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan (Renstra). Currently, the technical team is conducting a review of the Detailed Engineering Design (DED) which has been neglected since 2011. This document update covers vital aspects such as the construction of a traction substation, installation of Overflow Electricity (LAA), as well as improving station facilities and building a depot to support more intensive electric train operations.
Interestingly, the development of rail-based mass transportation also involves the private sector. PT Jababeka Infrastruktur has stated its readiness to carry out transformation at Lemah Abang Station. The plan includes providing extensive Park and Ride facilities to developing areas based on Transit Oriented Development (TOD). This integration aims to ensure that the growing industrial areas in Jababeka, Deltamas, and GIIC have access to efficient and modern connectivity.Data from Daop 1 Jakarta shows the urgency of this project clearly. With an average of 235,000 train users per day on this route, the presence of the KRL to Cikampek is predicted to significantly change the local economic landscape. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, it was recorded that more than 346,000 users had used local train services, a number that is certain to explode if travel frequency is increased through the KRL electrification system. If all stages go according to plan, the Cikarang-Karawang-Cikampek line electrification project is targeted to be fully completed by the end of 2029. This transformation is not just a route extension, but rather an effort to increase the efficiency of industrial areas which contribute greatly to National GDP. The public is encouraged to continue monitoring this progress, which is expected to be able to provide faster, safer and more integrated mass transportation services in the Jakarta agglomeration area.
