Two Young Karawang Farmers Study Agrometeorological Technology in Sumedang to Anticipate El Nino and La Nina

Seputarkarawang.com - Karawang, KARAWANG — Two young farmers from Karawang Regency took part in an educational visit to PPTPI (Climate Change Response Farmers Association) in Sumedang Regency on Thursday, May 21 2026. This activity aims to increase farmers' ability to anticipate the impacts of climate change such as El Nino and La Nina which have the potential to cause long dry seasons and extreme rainfall.Upon arrival in Sumedang Regency at around 10.00 WIB, the group was immediately greeted by the Chairman of PPTPI, Mr. Nandang SP, and Professor Yunita from the field of Agrometeorology, University of Indonesia. In her presentation, it was explained that the agrometeorological method applied aims to help farmers identify potential rainfall and climate changes so that they can determine the most suitable varieties and types of plants for the next planting season.Professor Yunita explained, although the prediction results cannot reach 100 percent accuracy, this method has proven to be very helpful for farmers, especially in Sumedang Regency. This program has been running for more than seven years and the prediction results are considered to be quite close to accurate because they are always combined with coordination with the local BMKG.The program also has support from international academics, including Professor Subwalker from Africa. Through an agrometeorological approach, farmers are encouraged to be better prepared to face changes in weather patterns that are increasingly difficult to predict.

One of the participants from Karawang, Nur, admitted that he was very interested in the application of climate-based agricultural technology. According to him, weather conditions which are now increasingly unpredictable mean that farmers need the ability to read climate patterns so that the risk of crop failure can be reduced."Weather conditions are now uncertain. With climate-smart farmers, this is really needed by farmers in Karawang Regency. It is hoped that the regional government through the Karawang Regency Agriculture, Food Security and Fisheries Service can facilitate the development of this program," said Nur.He added that the ability to predict long rainy and dry seasons is very important so that farmers can determine commodities and plant varieties that are more resistant to conditions. certain climate.During the five days of training at the Cianjur Food Security and Horticulture Training Center, the participants received various important material related to modern agriculture. These include managing irrigation canals, detecting plant pests, and techniques for reading potential climate changes for the next few months.According to Nur, this knowledge is an important provision for the younger generation so that agriculture is no longer seen as a traditional sector. "Today's farmers must be able to adopt modern technology and approaches to increase productivity while reducing the risk of losses due to weather changes."We hope that after returning to Karawang, the knowledge we learned can be applied and developed. Today's farmers must be modern, one of which is being able to predict the weather and determine the types of plants that are suitable for future climate conditions," he added.Interestingly, the tools used in this climate observation method are relatively simple. The equipment only uses a device measuring approximately 4 inches by 22 centimeters long which is installed at a height of 1.5 meters from the ground. Even though it is simple, this tool is considered effective in helping to observe climate conditions in the field.The Chairman of PPTPI, Mr. Nandang SP, hopes that the young people who take part in the training will not stop at just understanding theory, but will be able to apply this knowledge in their respective regions, including in Karawang Regency.The enthusiasm of young farmers will be a new hope for Indonesian agriculture towards a modern, adaptive and climate-smart agricultural system in order to maintain food security amidst the challenges of global weather change.
