Seputarkarawang.com - Karawang, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) cases in Karawang Regency have reached an alarming number with a record of 52,100 cases throughout 2025. Data from the Karawang Regency Health Service shows that this non-communicable disease no longer only stalks the elderly, but has spread massively to the productive age group and teenagers. This condition has triggered a strong warning for the public to immediately evaluate their lifestyle and daily consumption patterns in order to reduce the prevalence of this disease which is often referred to as the "silent killer".Head of the Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) Division of the Karawang Health Service, Yayuk Sri Rahayu, revealed that female sufferers dominate the figure with a total of 32,506 people, while men were recorded at 19,594 people. The most surprising phenomenon is the shift in the age trend of sufferers, where the 20 to 54 year age group contributed the most cases with a total of 25,713 cases. This proves that the risk factors for diabetes are now much closer to people in active age compared to the group over 55 years which recorded 22,938 cases.

Sadly, the threat of diabetes is also starting to touch the younger generation in Karawang with the discovery of 3,445 cases in teenagers aged 15 to 19 years, and there were even 4 cases in children under 15 years of age. Yayuk explained that type 1 diabetes in children is generally triggered by autoimmune disorders, but the increase in other young people is closely related to type 2 diabetes. High consumption of foods high in sugar, excess carbohydrates, lack of physical activity, obesity and stress are the main triggers for the soaring number of sufferers among millennials and Gen Z. Responding to this situation, the Karawang Health Service continues to intensify the Free Health Check (CKG) program in all Community Health Centers and other health service facilities as an early detection step. The public is encouraged not to be afraid to carry out routine examinations to identify risk factors from the start so that education and medical treatment can be carried out immediately. "The aim of this health check is so that people get early treatment if an illness is found, because the sooner it is discovered, the better the recovery process will be," said Yayuk in his statement, Wednesday (1/4).The regional government hopes that the people of Karawang will be wiser in managing a healthy lifestyle and taking advantage of the health screening facilities that have been provided free of charge. With the high prevalence rate in productive age, collective awareness is the main key so that people's productivity is not hampered by long-term health complications. Preventive steps through early detection and lifestyle changes are expected to reduce the graph of increase in Diabetes Mellitus cases in the Karawang Regency area in the coming years.
