Seputarkarawang.com - Karawang, The Karawang Regency Government (Pemkab) has taken firm steps by dismantling all installations of electric rat traps in the rice fields of Batujaya District. This action was taken following two fatalities due to electric shock from the trap in the same location. The Head of the Karawang Regency Agriculture Service, Rohman, explained that the latest victim died two days ago when he was about to go home after cultivating the rice fields, following a previous similar incident. Rohman emphasized that his party had actually been conducting outreach on the prohibition of the use of electric traps since last year because of the fatal risks they pose."There have already been two people who have died in Batujaya District. In fact, said Rohman, Thursday (2/7/2026).
Responding to this emergency situation, joint officers consisting of Muspika, UPTD Agriculture, village government and residents immediately carried out sweeping and dismantling of electrical trap installations throughout the rice fields. Rohman emphasized that the use of electricity to eradicate pests is not commensurate with the risk of loss of life, both for farmers and residents passing by.In addition to carrying out physical control, the Agriculture Service is now increasingly intensifying the socialization of the dangers of electric traps through village meetings, social gatherings, and direct outreach to farmer groups. He emphasized that this prohibition will continue to be enforced and officers will not hesitate to dismantle it again if new installations are found in the field. This incident adds to a long list of similar cases in Karawang, including the death of a resident of Pejaten Village, Cibuaya District, on Monday night (29/6/2026) which is also believed to have been caused by being electrocuted by an electric rat trap. The Karawang Regency Government urges all farmers to immediately switch to safer pest control methods for mutual safety.
